Nigeria’s 12‑match unbeaten streak was halted on Wednesday when Portugal defeated the Super Eagles 2‑1 in an international friendly.
The match was tightly contested until Portugal broke the deadlock in the 74th minute with a goal from Pedro Neto.
The Super Eagles answered quickly, equalising eight minutes later when Akor Adams converted a close‑range finish after a pass from Fisayo Dele‑Bashiru.
With the score level, Portugal added a second goal. Juventus winger Francisco Conceição produced a moment of brilliance, beating defender Zaidu Sanusi before curling a left‑footed shot from the edge of the area into the right corner.
Nigeria pushed for another equaliser in the final minutes, but Portugal held on to secure the win and end the Super Eagles’ impressive unbeaten run.
The loss was Nigeria’s first defeat in 12 matches, a streak that spanned both competitive and friendly fixtures.
Despite the setback, the game marked a personal milestone for midfielder Alex Iwobi, who earned his 100th cap for the Super Eagles, becoming only the fourth Nigerian player to reach the century mark in international football.
Portugal’s victory will give the team a confidence boost ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where they are drawn in Group K alongside DR Congo, Uzbekistan and Colombia.
