The Federal Capital Territory Police Command has rescued 36‑year‑old Grace Aniekuoku, who was reportedly chained and confined in a room by her brother for more than 16 months.
Commissioner of Police, FCT Command, Mohammed Sanusi, explained the situation on Monday. “We received a distress call on June 12, 2026, alleging that Ms. Aniekuoku, an Anambra State native, was being unlawfully detained by her brother, Chinedu Aniekuoku, under inhumane conditions,” he said.
Sanusi said detectives from the Katampe Division were dispatched immediately. “When we arrived, the suspect became hostile and denied us access to the premises where he had confined his sister,” he added.
“The officers forced entry into the room and found Ms. Aniekuoku chained, severely emaciated, and lying on her own waste in deplorable sanitary conditions,” Sanusi continued. “The suspect was arrested on the spot, and the victim was taken to a hospital where she is now receiving medical treatment.”
Preliminary investigations suggest that the suspect may have taken the victim’s son to an unknown location about two years ago. Police believe the prolonged confinement was intended to prevent Ms. Aniekuoku from questioning the child’s whereabouts.
Sanusi said authorities are actively searching for the missing child while the victim receives ongoing medical care and rehabilitation. He added that the suspect remains in police custody and will be brought to court once investigations conclude.
The FCT Police Command reaffirmed its commitment to protecting vulnerable individuals and urged residents to report abuse, unlawful detention, and other criminal acts promptly to law enforcement.
