The Lagos State Police Command has issued a statement denying reports that armed bandits have entered communities such as Ibeju‑Lekki, Imota, and Oke‑Afo, and that they were targeting schools and children.
In a release on Monday, the Command called the graphic alerts circulating on social media “false, misleading, and unfounded,” and said there is no current security crisis or coordinated attack on any school or community in the state.
The police urged residents to ignore the rumours, which they said were intended to create unnecessary panic. Authorities confirmed that schools across Lagos remain secure, with sufficient security presence and surveillance.
The statement noted that the fake alert has already caused a tragic, avoidable loss of life. A 24‑year‑old commercial motorcycle rider, Kulaha Ayuba, was killed by a group of youths who believed the area had been invaded by armed bandits.
Police say the attackers labeled Mr. Ayuba a “Fulani bandit” before assaulting him. His body was later found in a swamp in the community, and his motorcycle was reportedly stolen.
After a rapid police response, fifteen suspects were arrested in connection with the killing. The Command said the investigation is continuing and that those found guilty will face full legal consequences.
The Lagos State Police Command condemned the deliberate spread of unverified information, warning that it can incite public disorder, ethnic profiling, and mob violence.
“Individuals found responsible for originating, publishing, or deliberately circulating false and inciting information capable of causing public alarm, disorder, ethnic tension, or violence will be investigated and prosecuted,” the statement read.
Commissioner of Police CP Tijani Fatai urged residents to stay calm, remain vigilant, and obey the law. He encouraged people to report suspicious activities through official police or emergency channels rather than relying on unverified social media posts.
The Command reaffirmed its commitment to protecting lives and property, assuring Lagosians that adequate security measures are in place throughout the state.
