Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), has selected former Kano State Governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso as his running mate for the 2027 election.
Obi made the announcement on Saturday, shortly after the party officially confirmed him as its flag‑bearer ahead of the general election.
The decision came after the NDC’s presidential primary, in which Obi emerged as the party’s nominee.
Both Obi and Kwankwaso recently joined the NDC after departing from the African Democratic Congress (ADC) due to internal disagreements and prolonged legal disputes within their former party.
The new Obi‑Kwankwaso ticket is expected to reshape the 2027 presidential race by uniting two influential opposition figures who command strong support bases in different regions of the country.
Obi is widely popular among young voters and enjoys significant backing in the South‑East and parts of the South‑South, while Kwankwaso remains a major political force in Kano State and across northern Nigeria through his extensive network.
Party leaders have expressed optimism that the alliance will enhance the NDC’s chances in the upcoming election, describing the ticket as a strategic blend capable of attracting broad national support.
Further details of the party’s campaign strategy are expected to be released in the coming months as preparations for the 2027 polls gain momentum.
