MAKURDI — Tension has settled over Tse Orhungul settlement, located on the outskirts of Yogbo in Mbayer/Yandev Council Ward of Guma Local Government Area, Benue State, after a suspected armed herder attack that left one person dead and another seriously wounded.
The incident took place on Tuesday evening and was reportedly sparked by a dispute over cattle believed to be grazing on a maize farm near the community.
Residents say a group of youths found the cattle destroying crops and seized one animal, taking it to a security post in Yogbo. They intended to force the cattle owners to appear and negotiate compensation for the damaged farmland.
While the youths were still at the security post, the herders entered the village and confronted two brothers, Verse and Terkimbir, who were working on their farm behind the settlement.
Eyewitnesses report that the assailants attacked the brothers with machetes and swords, inflicting severe injuries before fleeing.
A resident who spoke about the incident said Verse sustained deep machete wounds and was rushed to hospital in critical condition. “The information that reached us this afternoon is that he did not survive the injuries,” the source said.
His younger brother, Terkimbir, also suffered multiple injuries during the attack and was taken to hospital for treatment. He is currently reported to be in stable condition.
Residents noted that the attack was not the first tragedy to affect the family, recalling that a younger sister of the victims was allegedly attacked in March and has remained under medical care since.
The latest attack has intensified fear among residents, who continue to express concerns over recurring violent encounters linked to suspected armed herders.
Efforts to obtain an official response from the police were unsuccessful. The Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Udeme Edet, had not yet responded to enquiries about the incident at the time of filing this report.
