Artan had been scheduled to travel to the United States as part of preparations for the World Cup but was reportedly turned away by US authorities.

American officials later said the decision was linked to concerns over alleged associations with individuals suspected of having ties to terrorist organisations.

The decision sparked widespread debate, with many expressing sympathy for the Somali referee, who has built a reputation as one of the country’s most prominent football officials.

Despite the disappointment of missing out on the global football showpiece, Artan’s return was marked by scenes of support and solidarity from fellow Somalis, who welcomed him as a symbol of national pride.
