The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate for Ogun State in 2027, Oladipupo Adebutu, said that without addressing the country’s insecurity, discussions of development are meaningless.
Adebutu stressed that the safety of lives and property is a prerequisite for prosperity, placing security at the top of his agenda.
He made these remarks during a media briefing on Monday in Abeokuta, the state capital, where he thanked the press for its “critical role” in fostering public accountability and democratic progress.
Adebutu lamented that journalists are operating in “one of the most difficult periods” worldwide, especially in Nigeria, and called for greater sacrifice across sectors amid the nation’s economic and governance challenges.
“This is not a good time for journalists in the world, particularly in Nigeria. The problem facing Nigeria today is insecurity. That is why security occupies the first position on our agenda. We cannot build a prosperous society without ensuring the safety of lives and property.”
He urged reporters to maintain fairness in their coverage, especially as the country approaches the 2027 general elections, warning that political communication will become more intense and potentially divisive.
Veteran journalist and the party’s deputy governorship candidate, Lateefah Yemi Sowunmi-Kolapo, added that the media remains the most important arena in their journey. She urged journalists to continue to report fairly, remain unbiased, and refuse intimidation. According to her, fair reporting would help stabilize the political environment and strengthen democratic participation.
Also speaking, Iyabo Obasanjo, the Ogun Central senatorial candidate for the party, insisted that the party will work for the people’s progress. She noted that although the state is known as Nigeria’s industrial capital, its impact is not felt by the populace. She urged the media to consistently hold political actors accountable as the country moves closer to another election cycle.
The former commissioner for health expressed confidence in the PDP, describing her association with the party as a reflection of her belief in its capacity to deliver electoral success.
Meanwhile, the party chairman, Abayomi Tella, asserted that the PDP of yesterday is back, better, and alive.
