The Ogun State Government has reiterated its directive that prohibits both public and private schools from charging students any fees for graduation ceremonies and end‑of‑session parties.

Professor Abayomi Arigbabu, the Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, confirmed the ban while meeting members of the Grand Union of Private Schools Association (GUPSA) at his office in Oke‑Mosan, Abeokuta, on Wednesday.

He explained that the directive was issued in response to widespread complaints and controversies from parents about the high costs imposed by some schools for graduation‑related events.

Arigbabu emphasized that the state government would not tolerate any practice that places an unnecessary financial burden on parents under the guise of organizing school ceremonies.

During the meeting, GUPSA requested the removal of learners’ photographs from Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) certificates. Arigbabu clarified the government’s position on this issue.

He stated that including learners’ photographs and Quick Response (QR) codes on BECE certificates is intended to protect the certificates’ credibility and curb examination malpractice.

He also revealed that the government has implemented measures to enhance the security of learners and all personnel within school environments.

He urged private school proprietors to support the government’s efforts by paying closer attention to school safety, including hiring security personnel when necessary.

He commended private school owners for their contributions to educational development in the state.

Arigbabu stressed that investment in education should be driven by a commitment to quality learning and character development rather than profit.

The commissioner also announced that the ministry is working on ways to integrate private schools into the Ogun Learning Enhancement and Academic Resource Network (OgunLEARN) platform.

“The OgunLearn initiative will give private schools access to the state’s digital lesson notes and ensure uniform quality instructional content for learners in both public and private schools,” he said.

Earlier, GUPSA President Mr Ustadh Ajibola praised the state government for its interventions in repositioning the education sector in the state.
