The Ogun State government has stated that the persistent gas emissions occurring in Ijebu‑Ode and surrounding areas are due to natural underground geological processes, not traditional myths or beliefs.

The chemical emissions, which have happened three times, have caused the hospitalization of at least 200 students and staff from Our Lady of Apostles Secondary School, Ijebu‑Ode, Anglican Girls Grammar School (AGGS), and other nearby schools.

According to DAILY POST, Governor Dapo Abiodun ordered the temporary relocation of students from Our Lady of Apostles Girls Grammar School, Ijebu‑Ode, to another site.

Abiodun said the move was necessary to safeguard students, teachers, and other school community members while specialists conduct detailed studies to identify the emission source.

During a Saturday town‑hall meeting organized by the state government, Commissioner for Environment Ola Oresanya disclosed that scientific investigations found the gases to be primarily methane and sulfide.

He said the gases originate from underground, released by established fractures or faultlines.
