The Federal Road Safety Corps Katsina Sector Command confirmed that eight passengers died and 17 others were injured in a fatal road collision on the Funtua‑Katsina Highway in Bakori Local Government Area, Katsina State.
The incident happened around 1:32 pm on Sunday at Layin Kukah on the Funtua‑Katsina Road, involving a Toyota Hiace commercial bus (registration 14B 92 TR) and an unregistered Bajaj tricycle.
A First Information Report from the command’s Public Education Officer, DRC Shamsudeen Babajo, stated that 25 people were involved; 17 were injured and 8 died.
The report blamed wrong overtaking for the crash. It noted that the incident was reported at about 1:34 pm, and the rescue team reached the scene around 2:04 pm, giving a response time of 30 minutes.
Babajo said the rescue team worked with the Community Watch Corps (C‑Watch). Victims and bodies were transported to Bakori Comprehensive Hospital for treatment and further examination, and the bodies were later moved to General Hospital, Funtua.
