Governor Francis Nwifuru of Ebonyi State has denied reports of parallel primaries within the All Progressives Congress (APC), affirming that the party remains unified throughout the process.
The governor praised APC stakeholders and members for conducting the House of Representatives primary elections peacefully across the state.
Speaking to journalists during the exercise on Saturday, Nwifuru expressed satisfaction with the consultations and cohesion among party members ahead of the primaries.
“As you can see, everybody is happy. We had very noble consultations with our stakeholders and several meetings were held. Issues were resolved at the zonal and constituency levels. What we are doing today is to elect candidates who will fly the flag of our party, and I believe we will produce very capable candidates.”
“We have only one congress committee. What is normal in democracy is for people to come out and test their popularity. There is no need for any parallel congress, and nobody is going to conduct one,” he said.
Governor Nwifuru expressed confidence in the committee’s ability to carry out a credible exercise, noting that members had already addressed concerns raised by journalists and party faithful.
When asked about reports that a particular aspirant had been disqualified, the governor said he had not been informed of such a development.
“You are just informing me about that,” he replied.
Regarding recent defections and resignations by some APC members in the state, the governor described the changes as part of the democratic process.
“This is politics. People joined the party with different interests. The question should be: what did these people do in 2023, and what evidence is there of their support? If people want to join another party to test their popularity, democracy allows that,” he added.
The governor maintained that the APC in Ebonyi State remains strong and united despite political realignments ahead of future elections.
Chief Stanley Okoro Emegha, the Ebonyi State Chairman of the APC, said that provisions for appeals existed in case of any disqualification, and that the primary election process was progressing smoothly.
“As you can see that everybody is happy. We did a very noble consultations with our stakeholders. We had so many stakeholder meetings. Issues were sorted out.”
“And what we are going to do today is elect the candidates that will fly the flag of our party. And I believe that, especially with support, we will elect a very competent candidate,” the APC chairman stated.
