Operatives of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) and private security staff attached to the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) branch in Awka, Anambra State, clashed at the Weather Head Estate, creating chaos among residents.
According to sources, the CBN private security team, led by its Chief Security Officer (CSO) in Awka, confronted NSCDC men who were on the estate performing a legitimate duty to recover a missing child.
Daily Post reports that NSCDC operatives were present after a petition concerning a four‑year‑old girl who was taken from her nursery school in Awka without her guardian’s permission. The child’s parents are estranged, and the baby was left in the father’s care, raising suspicion that the mother may have arranged her removal from school.
The NSCDC team had located the child in a building within the estate and was about to rescue her when a man identifying himself as the CBN CSO in Awka arrived in a sky‑blue Lexus RX 330 SUV. He blocked the NSCDC operatives and took the child away.
One source said, “The incident happened in my estate and generated a huge tension as both sides of the security men challenged each other, with guns corked. Many people in the residential estate took to their heels, hiding far away from the incident to avoid being caught up in a shootout.”
When our correspondent attempted to confirm the story, the phone lines of Okadigbo Edwin, Head of Media and Tactical Operations of the NSCDC Anambra Command, were not reachable.
Daily Post reports that the Anambra State command of the NSCDC has written to the Awka branch of the agency regarding the conduct of the CSO, calling for an investigation and asserting that their operatives were on legitimate duty.
