The Bauchi State government has lifted the suspension on commercial activities in several cattle markets located in the Alkaleri, Bauchi, Kirfi and Tafawa Balewa local government areas.

The decision, announced in a statement issued on Wednesday by the governor’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mukhtar Gidado, takes effect immediately.

Officials said the temporary reopening is necessary because the markets are strategically important for livestock trading, especially in the run‑up to the upcoming Eid al‑Kabir festival.

The move will allow residents to buy sacrificial animals for the celebration.

According to the statement, the markets will remain open for two weeks.

The government added that the decision was made in consultation with security agencies. Those agencies, together with local authorities and traditional leaders, will continue to monitor activities in the affected markets to maintain security and ensure peaceful conduct.

DAILY POST reports that on April 9, 2026, the state government had approved the immediate suspension of commercial activities in several cattle markets across the same local government areas, citing growing security concerns.

The government said the measure was taken to address security threats linked to the markets, including cattle rustling, kidnapping, killings, extortion, illegal arms exchange and other criminal activities.
