The Norwegian Football Federation (NFF) announced on Tuesday that it had requested FIFA’s ethics committee to investigate the awarding of a peace prize to former U.S. President Donald Trump.
FIFA president Gianni Infantino presented Trump with the organization’s inaugural peace prize during the December 6 draw for the 2026 World Cup.
Later that month, the human‑rights group FairSquare lodged a complaint with FIFA’s ethics committee, alleging that Infantino had violated his duty of neutrality by endorsing Trump.
FIFA has not disclosed the criteria used to bestow the peace award, which was given at a time when Trump and his administration repeatedly advocated for him to receive the Nobel Peace Prize.
NFF president Lise Klaveness said the federation acted independently in approaching FIFA’s ethics committee.
“I think other federations knew they could sign it if they wanted to,” she said. “We concluded that it was useless to put pressure on anyone; it would just create friction.”
Infantino has openly fostered close ties with Trump in the run‑up to the June 11‑July 19 World Cup, which will be hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico.
