…Presidential primary election to hold May 29, 2026 in Abuja

ABUJA – In preparation for the 2027 presidential and general elections, the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) announced that the cost of its presidential Expression of Interest (EOI) and Nomination Forms will be N60 million. The party also released a timetable for the primaries and the sale of forms.
The NDC set the fee for the governorship form at N30 million, broken down into N10 million for the EOI Form and N20 million for the Nomination Form.
For Senate aspirants, the fees are N3 million for the EOI Form and N5 million for the Nomination Form. House of Representatives candidates are required to pay N2 million for the EOI Form and N4 million for the Nomination Form.
State House of Assembly aspirants will pay N1 million for the EOI Form and N1.5 million for the Nomination Form.
The timetable was detailed in a statement jointly signed on Tuesday by the party’s National Chairman, Senator Moses Cleopas Zuwoghe, and National Secretary, Barrister Ikenna Morgan Enekweizu.
According to the statement, the sale of EOI Forms for all elective positions will open on Wednesday, May 13 2026, and close on Monday, May 18 2026.
Aspirants will undergo screening and interviews from May 19 to May 21, after which they become eligible to purchase Nomination Forms.
The sale of Nomination Forms will begin immediately after the screening exercise and run from May 21 to May 23, with completed forms required to be returned no later than May 25.
Appeals arising from the screening process will be considered on May 25 and May 26, and primary elections for the various offices are scheduled for May 27 and May 28.
The party’s presidential primary election is slated for May 29 2026 in Abuja.
Screening for State House of Assembly aspirants will be conducted in their respective states, while screening for National Assembly and presidential aspirants will take place at the party’s national headquarters in Abuja.
Governorship primaries will be held at the local government level, and all aspirants will be required to sign undertakings that align with the party’s code of conduct and electoral guidelines.
The NDC affirmed its commitment to a transparent, inclusive, and credible primary process capable of producing competent candidates for the 2027 elections.
“The party remains committed to a transparent and democratic process that guarantees fairness, inclusiveness and internal democracy in the conduct of its primaries,” the statement read.
The party also announced the adoption of an “open secret ballot” system for its primaries, stating that the method will enhance credibility and transparency during delegate voting.
A fee breakdown released by the NDC shows that presidential aspirants will pay N20 million for the EOI Form and N40 million for the Nomination Form, totaling N60 million.
The NDC claims its nomination fees are among the lowest when compared with those of other major political parties in Nigeria.
Concessions are provided for female aspirants and persons living with disabilities (PWDs). Women will pay 50 percent of the standard fees, while PWDs will receive a 75 percent waiver across all categories.
The statement reiterated the party’s resolve to deepen internal democracy as preparations for the 2027 general elections gather momentum.
