Argentina captain Lionel Messi has become the all‑time leading scorer in World Cup history.
Messi scored his 17th goal of the tournament in the 2026 edition, opening the scoring against Austria.
The Inter Miami star had missed an earlier opportunity to break the record when he rolled a penalty wide of the post.
He then found the back of the net from the edge of the box, giving Argentina the lead.
With this goal, Messi has surpassed former record holder Miroslav Klose, who now ranks second with 16 goals.
Messi is also the first player ever to appear in six World Cups.
