Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde announced that his administration is partnering with security agencies to investigate the student abduction that occurred on Friday in Ahoro-Esinele Community, Oriire Local Government Area.

He made the statement on Saturday during the inauguration of the Oyo State Police Command Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU) at the command’s headquarters in Eleyele, Ibadan.

Governor Makinde also highlighted ongoing efforts to devise measures that will prevent similar incidents in the future.

While expressing sympathy for the families of those who lost their lives, he emphasized that the tragedy underscores the need for a proactive security approach by the government.

He called on community leaders and residents to remain vigilant, monitor their surroundings, and report any suspicious activity to security agencies promptly.

Makinde reassured the public of the government’s unwavering commitment to crime‑fighting and to working closely with security agencies to safeguard the state.

He pledged continued support to enhance the collective capacity of security forces in protecting lives and property.

The governor described the VCRU as a pioneering initiative in the South‑West region.

According to him, the unit reflects the joint resolve of the state government and security agencies to respond swiftly and effectively to criminal activity.

He praised Inspector General of Police Tunji Disu and all security agencies for their efforts in maintaining the state’s safety.

Makinde expressed confidence that the VCRU will successfully fulfill its mandate to curb violent crimes while fostering lasting peace, safety, and stability in the state and across Nigeria.

During his welcome address, State Commissioner of Police Mr. Abimbola Olugbenga described the VCRU launch as a significant policing reform initiative.

The commissioner stated that the unit aims to strengthen public trust, elevate professionalism, and refine tactical operations in alignment with the I‑G’s vision.

He explained that the VCRU was established to replace former tactical teams, offering a more accountable, intelligence‑driven, professionally trained, and human‑rights‑compliant force.

According to the commissioner, the new unit will be equipped to respond rapidly to violent crimes and emerging security threats.

He added that officers were selected from various divisions and formations across the state based on discipline, operational experience, competence, and integrity.

The police chief commended the governor for supporting security advancements and for his administration’s commitment to peace.

He noted that ongoing institutional support from the government will continue to motivate security agencies in the state. (NAN)
