The chairman of the Labour Party (LP) in Nasarawa State, Alexander Umbugu, announced that expression‑of‑interest and nomination forms will be provided free of charge to all aspirants running under the party’s platform. He said the move is intended to lessen the financial burden on candidates who wish to serve the public, rather than those who rely on large loans to finance campaigns and later engage in corrupt practices.
Umbugu made the statement on Friday during a briefing with journalists. He explained that the party’s logo—a family comprising “Papa, Mama, pikin”—symbolises its commitment to all Nigerians, regardless of economic status.
“If you look at our logo, it is Papa, Mama and pikin. The people you are seeing, not all their fingers are equal. We want to treat them as if they don’t have money like other people; they should come to our party, and we are going to do the needful for them to come and contest. We have done that in 2023; many people won the election under the Labour Party free of charge,” he said.
He added that the party is now distributing forms for the governorship, House of Representatives, Senate, and House of Assembly nominations, inviting anyone who wishes to contest in the 2027 general election to apply. “Today we are here to present forms to our aspirants who have the intention to conduct the 2027 general election with me. We have the form from the governorship nomination form, expression of interest form, House of Reps Senate expression of interest form, House of Assembly expression of interest form and nomination forms. We call on our people to come, those who are aspiring under the platform of the Labour Party in Nasarawa State,” he stated.
Umbugu noted that other parties often charge high fees for nomination forms—up to one million naira for House of Representatives or Senate candidates, and as much as ten million naira in the last election, with some now demanding around twenty‑five million. He argued that such costs discourage candidates who would otherwise serve the people.
“How can someone get that kind of money? If the person gets to that position, he will not care to work for the people; he will want to make returns on his investments, so in the Labour Party we are looking at how people will come so that we offer the dividends of democracy to the people,” he explained.
The state chairman, a loyalist of Barr. Julius Abure, said that although a court ruling has currently favoured the Nanadi camp, he believes the Supreme Court will ultimately restore Abure as the rightful chairman of the party.
He added that his executive committee was formed following a congress held on December 2nd, 4th and 6th, 2025, and that the party will conduct a primary election to select candidates for all positions, starting with a by‑election in Nasarawa North Senatorial District to replace the late Senator Godiya Akwashiki.
