LAGOS — The Lagos State Police Command has stated that a viral video circulating on social media, which purports to show the arrest of armed Fulani men in Ikorodu, is actually an old clip from an incident that took place more than three years ago. The Command clarified that the footage does not represent the current security situation in Ikorodu or anywhere else in Lagos State.
In a statement released on Sunday by Police Public Relations Officer SP Abimbola Adebisi, the Command cautioned the public against sharing unverified information that could cause panic and erode confidence in security forces.
“The Lagos State Police Command wishes to state unequivocally that the video currently circulating on social media platforms depicting the arrest of some Fulani men allegedly found in possession of arms and ammunition in Ikorodu, Lagos State, is an old clip of an incident that occurred over three years ago and does not reflect the current security situation in Ikorodu or any part of Lagos State,” the statement read.
The Police noted that the renewed circulation of the video could create unnecessary fear and apprehension among residents.
“The recirculation of such outdated content as a recent occurrence is misleading, capable of creating unnecessary panic, fear and apprehension among residents. The Command therefore urges members of the public to disregard the video and refrain from sharing unverified information capable of undermining public confidence and peace,” the statement added.
The Command also warned social media users and content creators that spreading false or alarmist reports could lead to public disorder, and that offenders would be investigated and prosecuted in accordance with the law.
“The Command further warns social media users and content creators against the dissemination of false, unverified and alarmist stories capable of causing public disorder. Individuals found deliberately spreading misinformation or fake news will be investigated and prosecuted in accordance with extant laws,” Adebisi said.
Meanwhile, Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command, CP Tijani Fatai, has ordered intensified security deployment across key locations and flashpoints in the state to protect lives and property.
The operation involves increased deployment of personnel and operational assets to black spots, strategic sites, and entry and exit points throughout Lagos.
The Police said the measures are being carried out in partnership with other security and safety agencies to maintain peace and safety across the state.
“Residents are therefore encouraged to go about their lawful activities without fear, as adequate security measures have been emplaced to guarantee the protection of lives and property,” the statement said.
The Command further appealed to residents to remain vigilant and to support security agencies by providing credible and timely information on suspicious movements and activities within their communities.
