Former England striker Ian Wright criticized Canada coach Jesse Marsch after the national team’s 2‑1 defeat to Switzerland in the 2026 World Cup.
Prior to the match at BC Place in Vancouver, Canada topped Group A, and a draw would have secured them a place in the knockout stage as group leaders.
For Les Rouges, Promise David’s 76th‑minute goal was a consolation, as Switzerland had already taken the lead with goals from Ruben Vargas in the 46th minute and Johan Manzambi in the 57th minute.
Both Canada and Switzerland advanced to the knockout stage following Bosnia and Herzegovina’s 3‑1 win over Qatar; Switzerland gained an extra advantage with their victory.
Switzerland’s Round of 32 match will be held in Vancouver, giving them a home‑ground advantage and extra rest, while Canada will lose that benefit and must travel to Los Angeles for their first knockout match.
After the match, Wright voiced his criticism of Marsch’s cautious and indecisive tactics.
He told the ITV broadcast: “It doesn’t make sense to have the chance to win a match and remain in your own country, where you will benefit from the support of the fans, yet still discuss how much he believes in the spirit of this team.”
“He should have shown that belief from the opening of the game, enabling them to stay in the country and improve their chances.”
“At times, he appears performative. I do not wish to be harsh, but it seems he is merely saying the right things for appearances,” Wright concluded.
