Semi Ajayi’s Hull City make dramatic return to Premier League

Hull City secured promotion to the Premier League after a dramatic finish in the Championship play‑off final, with Oli McBurnie’s last‑gasp goal giving the Tigers a 1‑0 victory over Middlesbrough at Wembley. The win ended the season on a high note for the club, which had avoided relegation to the third tier only a year earlier.

McBurnie capitalised on a mistake by Middlesbrough goalkeeper Sol Brynn to score the decisive goal in the final moments of the second half. The result will see Hull earn at least £205 million (US$275 million) in the next three seasons from match‑day, broadcast and commercial revenue, according to football finance experts Deloitte. That figure could rise to about £365 million if the club survives its first Premier League season.

The triumph also brings closure to the “spygate” controversy that marred the second‑tier play‑offs. Southampton had been expelled from the competition after an independent commission found that their chief executive, Tonda Eckert, had specifically authorised the unauthorised filming of Middlesbrough’s training sessions. The Saints had beaten Middlesbrough 2‑1 on aggregate to reach the final before their expulsion.

Southampton’s admission of “multiple breaches of EFL regulations related to the unauthorised filming of other clubs’ training” was followed by a statement from chief executive Phil Parsons, who described the sanctions as “manifestly disproportionate”. The decision allowed Middlesbrough a second chance to win promotion, but they were unable to take advantage as Hull held on in a hot, hard‑fought match.

Hull’s owner, Acun Ilicali, had threatened legal action if the Tigers failed to beat Middlesbrough, a threat that was ultimately unneeded. Sergej Jakirovic’s side became the first sixth‑placed team to win promotion via the second‑tier play‑offs since Blackpool in 2010. Hull had secured a place in the final by defeating third‑placed Millwall, and they have been a surprise package throughout the season.

Hull’s journey to Wembley was characterised by a disciplined counter‑attacking approach. Middlesbrough dominated possession in the first half, but Hull’s strategy kept them constantly threatening. A cross from Liam Millar reached Lewie Coyle, who headed the ball over the line, while Mohamed Belloumi almost scored with a long‑range curler that missed wide. McBurnie also came close, heading a cross from Ryan Giles onto the crossbar. Middlesbrough’s attempts to break the deadlock were thwarted by David Strelec’s narrow miss from 20 yards and a missed chance by Dael Fry at close range.

High temperatures at Wembley drained both teams, leading to a sluggish second half. Hellberg substituted Hayden Hackney, the Championship Player of the Year, for the final 20 minutes, but Hackney, who had been sidelined by a calf injury since March 14, was unable to make a significant impact. Instead, McBurnie delivered the winning goal deep into stoppage time, heading the ball home after Brynn weakly palmed Yu Hirakawa’s cross into his path.
