On Monday night, suspected gunmen attacked the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS) in Kuru, near Jos, Plateau State, killing three security personnel while attempting to breach the country’s leading policy research center.

According to sources, the attackers entered the institute around 11:40 p.m. and opened fire, which sparked a gunfight with the security staff on site.

An anonymous staff member of the institute confirmed the incident and said the assault was launched without warning.

The source added that security operatives confronted the assailants fiercely to stop them from entering the institution.

The staff member revealed that three security personnel—two soldiers and one police officer attached to the institute’s security detail—were killed during the attack.

He also noted that the rapid response of security forces prevented the gunmen from penetrating deeper into the facility and inflicting additional damage.

The source said the motive behind the attack was still unclear at the time of reporting.

Bulus Haruna, a resident of Kuru in Jos South Local Government Area, also told the correspondent that residents of nearby communities panicked after hearing sustained gunfire that lasted several minutes.
