Government stronger than bandits, peace deals not an option — Gov Lawal

By Ibrahim Hassan-Wuyo

Governor Dauda Lawal of Zamfara State reiterated that his administration rejects any negotiations with bandits, stating that peace agreements with criminal groups are not an option in the state.

He made this stance clear during an interview with the BBC Hausa Service, conducted in Kaduna, where he emphasized the government's continued commitment to a military‑led strategy to address insecurity.

Lawal stated that it is unacceptable for any person or group to broker peace agreements with bandits, noting that those who do so act independently and do not represent the state government.

He added that his administration has consistently taken a hardline stance against dialogue with armed groups that carry out killings, kidnappings and attacks on communities throughout Zamfara.

He said, “Seeking a truce with bandits is not my opinion and never will be,” stressing that the state would not compromise with criminal elements.

The governor noted that reports of recent truce arrangements in some parts of the state were not sanctioned by his government.
