France international Ibrahima Konaté is set to depart Liverpool when his contract ends next month, after failing to agree on a new deal, according to several British media outlets on Friday.
The 27‑year‑old centre‑back, who has been with the club for five seasons since moving from Leipzig, had indicated in late April that he was “close to an agreement” with Liverpool, as reported by the BBC, the Times, the Guardian and other outlets.
However, the parties could not reach consensus on the financial terms of the contract.
Konaté, who will be part of France’s squad for the World Cup that begins next month, will become the third high‑profile player to leave Liverpool this summer, following Egyptian striker Mohamed Salah and Scottish defender Andy Robertson.
Centre‑back Jeremy Jacquet is set to join Liverpool from Rennes in a €70 million ($81.3 million) deal. The 20‑year‑old missed the final four months of the season due to a shoulder injury.
With captain Virgil van Dijk, 34, still in the squad, Liverpool will need a senior partner to address the defensive gaps that contributed to their fifth‑place finish in the Premier League.
