FIFA Acknowledges It Cannot Control All Visa Issues

On the eve of the World Cup, FIFA president Gianni Infantino acknowledged that the governing body does not have authority over visa approvals and border entry decisions in the United States.

During a press conference, Infantino was asked whether FIFA had “lost control of the tournament” after Somali referee Omar Artan was denied entry at the US border and members of the Iran team’s support staff were refused visas. He replied, “We try always to find solutions, but then we need to respect that we are not the kings of the world who can rule over governments and police forces, we are a sports organization.”
