Female lawyer dies while celebrating Ghana’s victory over Panama

Family, friends and colleagues are mourning the sudden death of 26‑year‑old lawyer Sarah Araba Tettey, who is said to have suffered a cardiac arrest while celebrating Ghana’s win over Panama on Wednesday.

An alumna of the Faculty of Law at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Tettey was called to the Ghana Bar earlier this year and had started practising with O & A Legal Consult, according to sources familiar with the case.

She was reportedly watching the match with friends at Standard Hostel, a private facility in Bomso near KNUST, when the incident happened.

Witnesses said she collapsed suddenly amid the celebrations after Ghana’s victory.

Friends and bystanders carried her to KNUST Hospital, known as Tech Hospital, where medical staff performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) for about 45 minutes in an attempt to revive her.

Despite the prolonged efforts of doctors and nurses, she was pronounced dead shortly thereafter.

Her death has sent shockwaves through Ghana’s legal community, especially among members of the KNUST law fraternity and her colleagues from the Ghana School of Law, many of whom knew her personally.

Known simply as Araba Tettey to friends and colleagues, she was admired for her professionalism and considered one of the promising young talents in the legal profession.

Her death has left many grieving the loss of a bright and promising legal mind.

Her body has been placed in the KNUST Medical School mortuary pending further arrangements.

The exact circumstances of her death have not yet been officially communicated by her family or medical authorities.
