The Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, urged Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf to adopt stronger measures against those disrupting the state’s administration.

Sanusi delivered the counsel during a traditional post‑Sallah visit to the governor in Kano. He emphasized that leadership demands both justice and authority, citing the Qur’an to support his view.

“In the Holy Qur’an, after Allah mentions messengers and holy books, He also speaks of iron, which scholars interpret as a symbol of power and authority. Justice cannot survive without authority and strength,” the Emir said.

The Emir praised Governor Yusuf for progress in education, health care and welfare programmes, but warned him against showing undue respect to people he deemed undeserving.

“When you honour a respectable person, they remain loyal to you. But when you honour someone without good character, they become proud and disrespectful,” Sanusi explained.

He noted that many residents now view the governor as overly patient amid the state’s unrest.

“Because of the disorder happening in Kano, people think the governor is too patient and that everyone can behave however they like,” the Emir said.

Sanusi urged Yusuf to exercise greater authority in governing the state.

“My advice to you as a brother is to face this challenge and make people understand that Kano has a government. Anyone who follows the law should live peacefully, but whoever refuses should face the consequences,” he added.

The Emir observed that the audience’s reaction indicated broad public support for a firmer approach.

He pledged that the emirate council would continue to back the governor, stressing that Kano’s future depends on the success of his administration.

In response, Governor Yusuf thanked the Emir and the emirate council and apologized for canceling the Hawan Daushe procession.

The governor explained that the event was called off to prevent violence during the Eid celebrations.

“I want to assure the Emir and the people of Kano that since Allah made me governor, I have never feared anyone except Allah,” Yusuf said.

He added that previous incidents of violence during public outings informed his decision to act cautiously to protect lives and maintain peace.
