Medical services at the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) in Owo, Ondo State, and its Akure Annex, the state capital, have been severely disrupted after the Association of Resident Doctors (ARD) announced a three‑day warning strike at the facilities.

The resident doctors halted work to protest the alleged assault of a colleague by a patient’s relative while on duty over the weekend.

With many patients left without care, the doctors demanded that the assailants be arrested and that the hospital’s security be strengthened.

Sources at FMC Owo say the crisis began when a patient’s wife allegedly attacked a doctor on duty. After the incident, a group of alleged thugs reportedly stormed the hospital in search of the physician.

Expressing concern over the incident, which the doctors described as a recurring problem, ARD FMC Owo issued a statement signed by its President, Dr Adeola Oluwadamilola, and General Secretary, Dr Dare Aderemi. The statement reads: “The Association of Resident Doctors Federal Medical Centre Owo convened an Emergency General Meeting (EGM) on 30 May 2026, following an assault on a doctor on call at the Akure Annex of the hospital.”

“The doctor was assaulted by the wife of a male patient. He was slapped several times and manhandled by her and the patient. Assault on doctors has become a ‘recurring decimal’ as this is the second occasion this year.”

“The congress, according to the NARD protocol, declares a 72‑hour total strike which begins at 8 am on 31 05 2026. The strike will be reviewed only when adequate armed security is provided in the hospital and its annexes.”
