The debutants opened the scoring in Miami when Kevin Pina struck a clean‑thru to register Cape Verde’s first-ever World Cup goal. Uruguay answered before the break, with Maximiliano Araujo and Agustín Canobbio finding the net to give the two‑time former champions a 2‑1 lead at half‑time.

In the second half, Helio Varela equalised for Cape Verde just after the hour, ensuring the match ended in a shared victory for both sides.
