Professor Mike Ozekhome, a leading constitutional lawyer and human‑rights advocate, has been stripped of his Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) status.

The Legal Practitioners’ Privileges Committee (LPPC) suspended Ozekhome at its 173rd General Meeting.

In a statement signed by LPPC Secretary Mr. Kabiru Eniola Akanbi, the committee said the action was taken under Paragraph 26(6) of the Guidelines for the Conferment of the SAN Rank and related matters.

Akanbi, who also serves as Chief Registrar of the Supreme Court of Nigeria, added that the suspension will remain in place until the final outcome of the disciplinary proceedings before the LPPC’s Disciplinary and Ethics Sub‑Committee.

The statement said the suspension is intended to protect the integrity, dignity and prestige of the SAN rank.

Consequently, Ozekhome is barred from presenting himself as, or claiming, to be a Senior Advocate of Nigeria until the disciplinary case is resolved.

“The LPPC remains committed to upholding the highest standards of professional ethics, integrity and discipline within the legal profession and to ensuring that the rank of SAN continues to command public confidence and respect,” the statement read.
