Former France international Olivier Giroud said that Argentina players are willing to sacrifice everything for their captain Lionel Messi.
Messi extended his impressive scoring run at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, scoring two goals in Argentina’s 2‑0 victory over Austria in their second group match on Monday.
His first goal against Austria moved Messi to the top of the World Cup all‑time scoring list with 17 goals, surpassing former Germany international Miroslav Klose’s 16‑goal record. He added a second goal in the same match, bringing his total to 18.
He has scored five goals in the 2026 World Cup, including a hat‑trick in Argentina’s 3‑0 win over Algeria in their opening group game.
Argentina, the current World Cup champions, secured a spot in the round of 32 with one match remaining.

Giroud, who was part of France’s 2018 World Cup‑winning squad, told the BBC about Messi’s influence on his teammates: “Lionel Messi has the players around him looking to him. They play for him, and that is a great honour for them! They respect him so much; it is a privilege to play alongside him.”
They are prepared to give everything on the pitch for him and to secure another World Cup in succession. He is more decisive than ever.
Messi continues to improve with age. He has scored five goals for Argentina in two matches, being the sole scorer. He consistently finds the right position at the right time, operating in the midfield to create and dictate play.
Messi has an opportunity to extend his record in Argentina’s final group match against Jordan.
