The All Progressives Congress (APC) achieved a complete victory in Gombe State’s local government elections, capturing all 24 chairmanship posts and every one of the 240 councillorship seats up for election.

After collating the results, Abdullahi Garba, chairman of the Gombe State Independent Electoral Commission (GOSIEC), announced that the APC had won in every local government area and ward.

“From the results received across the state, the APC emerged victorious in all the 24 local government chairmanship elections and won all 240 councillorship seats,” Garba said.

He called the exercise a landmark election, noting that it was the first held after the state expanded its local government structure from 11 to 24 administrative councils.

Garba explained that the expansion was made possible when Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya approved the creation of 13 Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs) to strengthen grassroots governance and speed up development.

He added that the commission had examined similar electoral models used in other states, such as Lagos, before recommending the expansion, which the Gombe State House of Assembly later endorsed through legislation.

“The 2023 election was held in 11 local government areas. Today, we have 24 administrative councils, and the number of councillorship seats has risen from 114 to 240. This marks a significant milestone in the state’s democratic development,” he said.

Garba noted that while many parties took part, only a few fielded candidates in the newly created councils.

He added that the APC ran candidates in every one of the 24 local government areas. The African Action Congress (AAC) fielded candidates in three councils. The Democratic Leadership Alliance (DLA) took part in six councils, while the Youth Party (YP), Zenith Labour Party (ZLP), and National Rescue Movement (NRM) each contested in three local government areas.

The GOSIEC chairman praised political parties, election observers, civil society organisations, security agencies, the media, and other stakeholders for their contributions to the peaceful conduct of the elections throughout the state.
