Algeria has lodged a complaint with FIFA, alleging that the refereeing in their World Cup opening match against Argentina was inadequate, according to talkSPORT.
Lionel Messi netted a hat‑trick as Argentina defeated Algeria 3–0 in Group J, a result that left the Algerian side particularly dissatisfied with the 2022 World Cup‑winning captain.
During the match in Kansas City, Messi was seen standing on the calf of Algerian defender Aissa Mandi.
The eight‑time Ballon d’Or winner, competing in his record‑equalling sixth World Cup, was not shown a yellow card for the incident.
Messi’s opening goal gave Argentina a 1–0 lead at halftime, after which he scored twice more in the second half to secure the win.

Lionel Scaloni’s Argentina are aiming to become the first nation to retain the World Cup since Brazil in 1962.
The three‑time world champions may consider themselves fortunate to have Messi fit for their upcoming group match against Austria on Monday.
Similarly, Alexis Mac Allister was not penalised for an elbow on midfielder Ibrahim Maza, a Liverpool player.
Poland’s Szymon Marciniak officiated the match, having previously refereed Argentina’s dramatic 2022 World Cup final against France.
Although Marciniak is widely regarded as one of the top referees, Algeria expressed dissatisfaction with his management of the game.
The Algerian Football Association reportedly sent a formal complaint to FIFA’s refereeing commission.
They were not the only team with a refereeing grievance; South African coach Hugo Broos also criticized the decision after his player Themba Zwane was sent off for an action similar to Messi’s during their opening match against co‑host Mexico.
