ABUJA — Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) for the 2027 election, declared that the vice‑presidential office would be an active partner in governance rather than a ceremonial role.
Obi made the statement on Saturday after accepting the party’s nomination and announcing Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso as his running mate.
In a post on his X account, Obi pledged to uphold the rule of law, strengthen democratic institutions, and ensure transparency if elected president.
He said that the rule of law would be strictly observed by both public officials and citizens in line with constitutional provisions.
“The rule of law will be fiercely upheld, and adherence to it will be sacrosanct for both government officials and citizens alike, strictly in accordance with our constitutional frameworks,” he said.
Obi also vowed to promote a democratic system that respects opposition parties and guarantees inclusive governance.
“Our democracy will exemplify true governance of the people, by the people and for the people, completely free from interference by the ruling party. Instead, we will institutionalise deep respect for opposition parties and foster constructive engagement in governance,” he added.
“Under my leadership, democracy will be pursued with integrity, fairness and transparency,” Obi stated.
Regarding his running mate, Obi emphasized that the vice president would play a meaningful role in governance.
“I will make democracy work, and the Vice President will be a partner, not a spare tyre. I hereby accept my affirmation and nominate Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso as my Vice President,” he said.
Obi expressed confidence that the partnership would contribute to his vision of national renewal, improved governance, and economic transformation.
