The Federal Government, through the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC), has pledged to prosecute anyone who tamper with citizens’ data in the lead‑up to the 2027 general elections.

National Commissioner Vincent Olatunji delivered the warning during a guest interview on Channels Television on Saturday.

The statement was made amid growing concerns about data privacy and the security of voter information in Nigeria.

Olatunji said the commission is stepping up its monitoring of how personal data is handled by political actors and institutions, especially as election activities begin to gain traction.

He noted that, at a time when political parties and other groups are gathering large volumes of voter‑related data, protecting citizens’ personal information has become a pressing national issue.

“They are collecting data of their party members. What kind of privacy safeguards, what kind of guardrails do they have in place? They don’t even know. That’s the truth. Anyone found revealing people’s data will be prosecuted,” he said.
