KANO — A 32‑year‑old woman and her 18‑month‑old son were among three people rescued from wells in separate incidents in Kano State on Friday.
The Kano State Fire Service reported that the incidents occurred in Kumbotso and Warawa Local Government Areas after distress calls were received between 7:06 a.m. and 9:40 a.m.
The service’s spokesperson said that in the Warawa incident, firefighters responded to a call from Madarin Taba Village involving a woman and her child.
When the rescue team arrived, they found the woman, identified as Maimuna Shitu, and her son, Harisu Muntari, trapped inside a well.
Information from the woman’s father indicated that she had been suffering from a mental illness.
“Both victims were rescued unconscious and handed over to the Ward Head, Yusuf Surajo, and the woman’s father, Muhammad Shitu,” the statement read.
In a separate incident at Semegu area near El‑Sadeeq Bread in Kumbotso Local Government Area, an unidentified man, believed to be about 40 years old, was also rescued after falling into a well.
“The victim was rescued unconscious and handed over to the Divisional Crime Officer, Salisu Salihu, of the Panshekara Police Division for further investigation,” the agency added.
The Fire Service said investigations were ongoing to determine the circumstances surrounding both incidents.
Responding to the development, the Director of the Kano State Fire Service, Alhaji Sani Anas, urged residents to adopt safety measures to prevent similar occurrences.
“Residents, especially parents and guardians, should ensure that wells are properly covered to avoid such incidents,” he said.
