Manchester United legend Gary Pallister has advised the Red Devils to target Nottingham Forest defender Neco Williams to provide cover and competition for the injury-prone Luke Shaw.

Shaw was the only United player to start every Premier League game last season, becoming just the fifth outfield player to have started all 38 top flight games for the club during a campaign.

However, Pallister believes that while Shaw remains a top player, his persistent injury record requires United to sign a Premier League-proven backup who can handle the demands of playing multiple competitions.

“Neco Williams is a young lad who has shown promise,” Pallister told Sports Mole.

“I thought Luke Shaw had a really good season, but there is always going to be some doubt because of his injury history. He still has something to give so I would still see Williams as a backup for him.

“United are back in Europe and you can’t expect Shaw to play twice a week, every week. Williams will offer strength in depth, and he’s an exciting player, so I think it’s a good move.”

Williams, who made 33 senior appearances for Liverpool before moving to the City Ground in 2022, is viewed as an exciting and promising option for the position.

Securing the 25-year-old Welsh international will not be easy, as Nottingham Forest are highly keen to keep him and he has also attracted interest from Newcastle United.
