Folarin Balogun made a striking entrance on the world’s biggest football stage with a standout performance for the United States at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, according to Afrik‑Foot.

The AS Monaco striker netted twice as the United States defeated Paraguay 4‑1 in their opening Group D match at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles early Saturday morning. With a packed crowd of 70,492 in attendance, Balogun delivered a Man of the Match display that immediately justified America’s long pursuit of the former Arsenal academy product.

The 24‑year‑old had an earlier effort ruled out for offside before opening his account in the 31st minute. Christian Pulisic’s deflected cross found Balogun inside the box, and the striker calmly finished from 14 yards.

Deep into first‑half stoppage time, Malik Tillman supplied a perfectly weighted through pass. Balogun shrugged off a defender, cut inside and curled a superb strike into the top‑left corner to make it 3‑0.

His brace made history. Balogun became the first American player in 96 years to score multiple goals in a World Cup match, matching a feat last achieved by Bert Patenaude during the inaugural tournament in 1930, also against Paraguay.

Yet despite Balogun’s dream start to the World Cup, Nigeria can look at his performance and still feel completely comfortable with how events unfolded during the international recruitment battle that ended in 2023.

Folarin Balogun: Osimhen’s status left little room for doubt

Born to Nigerian parents in the United States but raised in England, Folarin Balogun was eligible to represent all three nations.

Despite playing for England and the United States at youth levels, the former Arsenal and Middlesbrough forward remained on the radar of the Nigeria Football Federation.

However, while Balogun was deciding between England, Nigeria and the United States, the Super Eagles already possessed one of the most feared strikers in world football.

Victor Osimhen had established himself as Nigeria’s undisputed first‑choice centre‑forward long before Balogun made his final decision. The former Lille star fired Napoli to a historic Scudetto title and powered the Super Eagles to the final of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations. He had already strengthened his reputation as the face of Nigerian football before moving to Galatasaray.

At both club and international level, Osimhen consistently delivered goals, leadership and match‑winning performances. He was already the focal point of the Super Eagles attack and one of Africa’s biggest football stars.

Unlike the United States, who were searching for a long‑term number nine to lead their 2026 World Cup project, Nigeria already had their main man.

Balogun would have arrived knowing that displacing Osimhen from the starting lineup would be one of the toughest challenges in international football.

It was, therefore, a smart choice for the former Reims man to pick the United States ahead of Nigeria.

Nigeria’s attack was already overflowing with talent

Another major reason the Super Eagles were comfortable moving on was the depth available in attack.

Even if Balogun had chosen Nigeria, he would have joined a queue featuring Ademola Lookman, Victor Boniface, Taiwo Awoniyi, Terem Moffi and several other forwards competing for places.

Lookman had become one of Africa’s most influential attackers, while Boniface emerged as a key figure in Bayer Leverkusen’s rise in Germany. Awoniyi and Moffi also brought proven experience from top European leagues.

Balogun knew the United States offered something Nigeria simply could not guarantee, a clear pathway to becoming the team’s leading striker and poster boy ahead of a home World Cup.

The Super Eagles, meanwhile, had bigger concerns than finding another centre‑forward. Their recent setbacks came from coaching mishaps, defensive mistakes, midfield balance and squad availability rather than a shortage of goalscorers.

That is why Balogun’s decision never triggered panic in Nigeria. While the American striker is now enjoying his World Cup moment in Los Angeles, the Super Eagles remain convinced they already have Africa’s premier number nine in Victor Osimhen.

Folarin Balogun may have become a star for the United States, but Nigeria’s faith in Victor Osimhen has been fully justified.
