Manchester United are preparing an opening bid of about £65 million for West Ham United midfielder Mateus Fernandes, Sky Sports reports.
Michael Carrick has focused on the 21‑year‑old as part of the club’s midfield overhaul.
United have cooled interest in Elliot Anderson, after Nottingham Forest demanded a British record fee for the England midfielder. Forest rejected an initial £106 million offer from Manchester City for Anderson.
Mateus FernandesWest Ham’s relegation from the Premier League could make Fernandes a more attainable target, although the club is reportedly seeking a substantial fee. The East Londoners are understood to be demanding twice the £38 million paid to sign Fernandes from Southampton last summer.

According to journalist Steve Kay, United plan to submit an opening offer of £65 million. The Red Devils hope the bid will persuade West Ham to sell, as the club needs to raise roughly £150 million after relegation.
Fernandes is eager to move to Old Trafford and has previously cited Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes as a role model. He made his international debut for Portugal earlier this year.
