Galatasaray are planning to hand Victor Osimhen the club captaincy for the 2026/27 season as part of a major effort to keep the Nigerian striker in Istanbul, Afrik-Foot reports.
The Turkish champions see the 27-year-old, who was also considered for the Super Eagles captainship, as the face of their future project. Club executives and head coach Okan Buruk believe giving Osimhen the armband will strengthen his emotional connection to the club and help convince him to stay despite interest from top European teams and wealthy clubs in the Saudi Pro League.
Turkish football insiders say Galatasaray are offering Osimhen a level of authority he may not receive immediately at clubs such as Arsenal or Chelsea, where established leadership groups already exist.
The captaincy plan is closely linked to the expected departure of current skipper Mauro Icardi. If the Argentine leaves, Osimhen is also expected to inherit Galatasaray’s iconic No. 9 jersey, a shirt traditionally worn by the club’s leading striker. The Super Eagles star currently wears number 45.
His influence is already growing behind the scenes. Reports say Osimhen recently encouraged Galatasaray to pursue international teammate Emmanuel Fernandez as the club strengthens its squad for the UEFA Champions League.

When Osimhen is officially appointed Galatasaray captain, here are the three biggest responsibilities that will land on his desk.
Captain Victor Osimhen’s big responsibilities
Unite the dressing room
As captain, Osimhen would be expected to become the bridge between Galatasaray’s Turkish players and its foreign stars.
One of his biggest jobs will be helping new signings settle quickly in Istanbul. Because he is one of Africa’s most recognizable footballers, younger players may look to him for guidance on and off the pitch.
He will also be expected to maintain discipline and act as the main link between Okan Buruk and the squad during a demanding season that includes league matches, cup games, and European competition.

Galatasaray captains face intense attention from the Turkish media, especially when results are poor. Osimhen would be expected to speak for the team during difficult periods and protect younger teammates from criticism.
He would also become the club’s main voice before and after high-pressure derby matches against Fenerbahçe and Beşiktaş, fixtures that often dominate headlines across Turkey.
Off the field, Galatasaray will hope his status as a former African Player of the Year winner will help promote the club globally and strengthen its profile in Africa and beyond.
Lead on the pitch and influence transfers
Under UEFA and Turkish Football Federation rules, the captain is usually the team’s main communicator with referees. Osimhen would therefore be expected to manage discussions with officials during tense matches and help keep teammates focused.
Tactically, he would lead Galatasaray’s high-pressing style from the front, setting the intensity for the entire team.
He is also expected to continue advising the club on recruitment, with his reported recommendation of Emmanuel Fernandez seen as an early example of his growing influence.
