After helping the Turkish giants retain their Super Lig crown last season, Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen is being considered as one of the club’s new captains following the departure of their skipper, Mauro Icardi, Afrik Foot reports.
Galatasaray manager Okan Buruk recently confirmed that the club wants Osimhen to take on greater responsibility within the squad.
“We want to give responsibility to Victor Osimhen. It will be important for him to be among the new captains we choose,” Buruk said in quotes revealed by Le Merca Sports.
While his impressive return of 22 goals and six assists in 33 appearances certainly strengthens his case, there appears to be one major reason behind Galatasaray’s thinking.

Before Mauro Icardi became captain, Uruguayan goalkeeper Fernando Muslera heralded the captain armband for the Cimbom Aslan.
Replacing Muslera was never going to be easy. The 40-year-old spent over a decade at Galatasaray and became one of the most influential figures in the club’s modern history, not only because of his performances but also due to his leadership.
Buruk himself admitted that Muslera had a “strong hold over the locker room.”
That statement offers a clue as to why Osimhen has emerged as the leading candidate.

His relentless work ethic, emotional connection with supporters and willingness to shoulder responsibility have made him one of the first names teammates look towards during difficult moments.
Leadership beyond statistics
Osimhen’s influence has often gone unnoticed because most conversations surrounding him focus on goals.
However, former Super Eagles teammate Maduka Okoye previously revealed that the Galatasaray striker plays an important role behind the scenes, especially when it comes to helping younger players settle.
Those qualities mirror many of the attributes Muslera possessed during his years in Istanbul.
Osimhen is also one of the few players capable of uniting both the dressing room and the fanbase.

That connection is particularly important at a club where captains are expected to represent the identity of the institution.
Why Galatasaray trust Victor Osimhen
Captains at elite clubs are often chosen not only because they are star players but because they can handle pressure.
Osimhen has repeatedly shown that he thrives under expectations. From leading Napoli to a historic Serie A title to carrying Nigeria’s attack at major tournaments, the 27-year-old has consistently embraced responsibility.
Galatasaray may therefore view him as the natural figure to lead the next generation of the squad.
With Mauro Icardi no longer central to the team’s long-term plans and Muslera gone, the Turkish champions need a new face of the project, and Osimhen fits that profile perfectly.

If Osimhen officially becomes one of Galatasaray’s captains, it could also strengthen his credentials for future leadership roles with the Super Eagles.
Questions regarding his temperament have occasionally surfaced, but captaining one of Europe’s most demanding clubs would offer valuable experience in managing dressing-room dynamics and media expectations.
More importantly, it would further underline what many within Nigerian football already believe: that Victor Osimhen is gradually evolving from being Nigeria’s best player into one of its most influential leaders.
For Galatasaray, however, the immediate objective is clear. The Turkish giants are not simply looking for someone to wear the armband.
