US-Iran deal to be signed in Switzerland on Friday

A memorandum of understanding between the United States and Iran, intended to end the current Middle East conflict, will be signed at the Burgenstock resort in Switzerland on Friday, the Swiss foreign ministry announced.

On Sunday, Tehran and Washington confirmed that they had reached an agreement on the memorandum, which was prompted by the conflict that began on February 28 after U.S. and Israeli strikes on Iranian targets.

“The signing is scheduled for Friday, June 19, at Burgenstock,” the Swiss foreign ministry said in a statement.

The Burgenstock resort, located high above Lake Lucerne in central Switzerland, is difficult to access, surrounded by water on three sides, and is therefore considered secure.

The ministry added that the venue was suggested by Pakistani and Qatari mediators, as well as by the United States and Iran.

“Switzerland is acting as a facilitator in this process, creating the practical and diplomatic conditions necessary for this meeting to take place on Swiss territory,” the ministry said.

The agreement follows weeks of tense negotiations and threats of renewed hostilities.

A senior U.S. official said that the framework agreement has already been signed electronically by U.S. President Donald Trump, Vice President J.D. Vance, and Iran’s deputy foreign minister, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, the country’s top negotiator.

The text of the agreement has not been released, leaving uncertainty about the specific terms agreed upon during the difficult negotiations.

The parties had intense disagreements over issues such as Iran’s nuclear program, sanctions, and the Strait of Hormuz.

Vance told CNN that the document was “about a page and a half, so it is a very general document.”
