Monday Ubani, chairman of the Nigeria Bar Association Electoral Committee, stated that Nigeria would be safer if local governments assumed responsibility for security.
He made the remark on Thursday during an interview on Arise Television’s ‘Morning Show’, answering questions.
The comment followed the Senate’s passage of the controversial State Police Bill into law on Wednesday, aimed at tackling Nigeria’s escalating insecurity.
“Security is local. As a local government chairman, I know every entry and exit point in my area and can work with security agencies and the state government to protect my community.”
“If local governments are empowered to take responsibility for security, Nigeria will be much safer. State police is the answer to Nigeria’s over‑centralised policing system.”
“We need state police. Over‑centralised policing has failed to adequately protect lives and property.”
“I commend this administration and the 10th National Assembly for taking the historic step of decentralising Nigeria’s policing system to strengthen security,” he said.
