Four‑time Danish champions FC Midtjylland have announced that Nigerian striker Stanley Iheanacho has re‑signed with the club on a contract that runs until 2030, according to Afriq Foot.

The 21‑year‑old will return to the club where his European career began. Iheanacho previously played for Midtjylland’s U19 side during the 2023/24 season, netting 12 goals in 22 appearances and scoring twice in four UEFA Youth League matches.

After two seasons in Portugal with C.D. Mafra, where he tallied 17 goals in 63 games, Midtjylland decided the time was right to bring him back into the first team.

Midtjylland has long been a launchpad for Nigerian talent, and Iheanacho has already been compared to former club star Paul Onuachu.

Sporting director Kristian Bach Bak explained that Iheanacho’s return is based on progress rather than sentiment.

“Stanley has matured significantly during his spell in Portugal,” Bak said. “He is positive, hardworking and has a high top speed. He is dynamic, moves a lot and presses aggressively. He works hard and can score goals.”

Iheanacho said the decision to return was straightforward. He described Midtjylland as the “springboard” of his career, noting that his first spell at the club laid the foundation for his development in Europe.

“I enjoyed my time at the academy; it was the start of my career,” he said. “I made my first‑team debut, which was a proud moment, but I chose to move to Mafra to get more game time. After a good season there, I feel the next step is back to Midtjylland, where I can continue my development and aim for titles and Europa League football.”

Can Stanley Iheanacho emulate Paul Onuachu’s goalscoring record at Midtjylland?

Paul Onuachu joined Midtjylland’s first team in 2015 at age 21 and left four years later as one of the club’s most prolific strikers. In 149 appearances he scored 65 goals and added four assists, helping the club win two Danish Superliga titles and one Danish Cup.

Onuachu’s success paved the way for other Nigerian talents such as Frank Onyeka and Raphael Onyedika, who also went on to achieve success after leaving the Danish side.

Iheanacho’s numbers to date are still far below Onuachu’s. His 17 goals in 63 matches for Mafra show promise, but they do not yet reflect the dominance Onuachu displayed in Denmark.

Both players occupy the same position but have different profiles. Onuachu, standing 6 ft 7 in, was a traditional target man, physically dominant and aerially exceptional. Iheanacho, 6 ft 1 in, relies more on speed, pressing intensity and off‑the‑ball movement.

That difference could work in Iheanacho’s favour, as Mike Tullberg’s tactics demand more fluidity from forwards than during Onuachu’s era, aligning naturally with Iheanacho’s strengths.
