Nigeria Premier Football League side Abia Warriors have placed technical adviser Imama Amapakabo and chief coach Bethel Oji on suspension for alleged insubordination, appointing former Super Eagles goalkeeper Ike Shorunmu as interim head of the club, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.
The decision is documented in an official letter dated 11 May 2026, signed by club chairman John Sam Obuh, which our correspondent obtained.
The letter states that both coaches are suspended from all football‑related duties while investigations continue.
“Abia Warriors have suspended Imama Amapakabo and Bethel Oji from all club activities with immediate effect over alleged acts of insubordination,” the letter reads.
It also notes that Shorunmu has been instructed to assume responsibility for the team together with his support staff.
“Ike Shorunmu and his assistants have been directed to immediately take charge of the team’s operations until further notice.”
The suspensions are said to follow incidents that occurred during Abia Warriors’ FA Cup semi‑final against Ahudiyannem FC and their NPFL home loss to Kun Khalifat.
Club officials allege that the coaching staff ignored directives and advice regarding team selection and tactical changes in both matches.
According to the club, the purported refusal to follow instructions contributed to disappointing defeats that embarrassed both the club and Abia State.
Abia Warriors confirmed that investigations into the matters are ongoing, and the suspended officials have been asked to cooperate fully with the investigative panel when summoned.
Shorunmu, a former Super Eagles goalkeeper who has also served as a goalkeeping coach for Nigeria’s national teams, now faces the challenge of stabilising the club during a turbulent period.
The development arrives at a critical juncture of the NPFL season, with Abia Warriors’ hopes of returning to continental competition already extinguished and their final match of the season against Warri Wolves reduced to a formality.
