In Moscow on Thursday, Russia’s Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Borisenko Evgenievich, received the newly appointed Nigerian Ambassador to Russia, Joseph Iji.
Communications Officer Daria Senyushina of the Russian Embassy in Nigeria reported the meeting in a statement released in Abuja on Friday.
Senyushina said that Evgenievich accepted Iji’s credentials, which were presented in the form of copies.
During the audience, the two officials discussed matters pertinent to the continued strengthening of the traditionally friendly ties between the two nations.
They touched on expanding political dialogue and deepening cooperation across trade, economics, science, technology, humanitarian efforts, and other areas.
Diplomatic relations between Nigeria and the former Soviet Union have existed for more than six decades, with Russia maintaining an embassy in Abuja and a consulate in Lagos.
The partnership between the two countries has encompassed trade, military collaboration, education, and energy sectors.
