The Anambra State Police Command has taken into custody 26‑year‑old Thankgod Ikwugwara in connection with the murder of his married lover, which allegedly occurred three months ago in Oraifite, Ekwusigo Local Government Area.
The victim, a 33‑year‑old woman whose identity has been withheld, was reported missing by her mother on 13 March 2026 at the Oraifite Divisional Police Headquarters. Her body was found the following day inside a culvert near Jesus Bus Stop in Oraifite.
Police announced that Ikwugwara was arrested on 6 June 2026 together with 20‑year‑old accomplice Makuochukwu Uzoigwe.
SP Tochukwu Ikenga, spokesperson for the Anambra State Police Command, said the arrests followed the transfer of the case to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Awka for further inquiry.
“Operatives acted on intelligence and digital forensic leads, tracked the suspects, and made the arrests after sustained efforts,” Ikenga stated.
He added that the principal suspect confessed to the crime during interrogation. According to the confession, Ikwugwara had been in a relationship with the deceased for about three years and was unaware that she was married. He claimed that a dispute involving the woman’s husband caused him to develop an unexplained illness that affected his sight, prompting him to seek revenge.
Ikenga further explained that on 13 March 2026, Ikwugwara lured the victim to his residence under the pretense of needing assistance for his illness. Once she arrived, he and Uzoigwe allegedly attacked her with a machete, killing her. The body was then disposed of in a culvert near Jesus Bus Stop the next day.
Both suspects have confessed and will be charged in court after the investigations conclude.
Commissioner of Police CP Ikioye Orutugu praised the detectives for their professionalism and reiterated the command’s commitment to delivering justice for crime victims.
