The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) in Kebbi State has requested that its orientation camp be moved to Birnin Kebbi, citing security concerns at the current temporary site in Bausara, Jega Local Government Area.
State Coordinator Bala Dabo‑Kagarko made the announcement during a press interaction at the camp.
Dabo‑Kagarko explained that security assessments had shown the present location to be vulnerable and that the host community lacked the capacity to provide adequate protection for the corps members.
The orientation camp had previously been relocated from its permanent site in Dakingari, Suru Local Government Area, after insecurity arose in that area.
The coordinator said the proposed move to Birnin Kebbi follows recommendations from security agencies, which view the state capital as a safer environment for corps members undergoing orientation.
“Recently, the NYSC requested to relocate this camp to Birnin Kebbi metropolis for the safety of the corps members. This area is on the outskirts of the town, and the report from the security agencies was that this place is exposed and the community harbouring the camp cannot give adequate security for the camp,” he said.
The coordinator also noted that corps members would not be posted to Arewa, Augie, and Sakaba local government areas because of security challenges.
He added that the number of corps members assigned to Kebbi has fallen, with only 492 corps members registered for the current orientation exercise.
Dabo‑Kagarko attributed the decline to issues such as inadequate accommodation facilities and poor infrastructure for corps members in the state.
He said the NYSC determines postings based on the availability of facilities such as hostels, water supply, electricity and other essential amenities.
According to him, the scheme requires improved infrastructure and accommodation facilities to attract more corps members to the state.
