Oyo Govt demonishes three buildings linked to criminal activity, arms cache

Oyo State Government demolished three buildings on Tuesday that were linked to criminal activity and an arms cache.

The structures were located within a fenced compound on Arubiewe Road in the Gbendu community, off Olodo-Garage in Ibadan. They were reportedly used as hideouts for criminals and for storing ammunition.

Commissioner for Public Works and Transport, Mr Mojeed Mogbonjubola, told reporters at the site that the buildings were a “major hideout for arms and ammunition.”

He added that the state Commissioner of Police, Mr Abimbola Olugbenga, had briefed Governor Seyi Makinde on the matter. “So instruction came that we should demolish the buildings, and that’s what we’re doing right now,” he said.

Mogbonjubola said the ministry had followed due process before starting the demolition. He noted that the state government would not treat security matters lightly, recalling a similar demolition a week earlier of a building that had sheltered the kidnappers of the sister of former Minister of Power, Chief Bayo Adelabu.

“As we have always maintained, what we are doing today serves as a strong deterrent to those engaged in criminal activities in the state,” he said. “The governor won’t tolerate the inadequacies of these bad eggs in the state.”

The commissioner urged residents to stay vigilant and advised landlords and property agents to thoroughly screen prospective tenants before renting out their properties.
