The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Jigawa State Chapter has handed out roughly N2 million in Sallah support to veteran journalists and the families of deceased media practitioners in the state.
Chairman of the council, Comrade Ismail Ibrahim Dutse, said the initiative was intended to help beneficiaries meet the economic demands of the festive season.
He added that the gesture also serves to recognize the significant contributions of veteran journalists and late members who have played key roles in the union’s growth and development over the years.
According to him, the financial aid was provided by the Jigawa State Government under Governor Umar Namadi to assist the recipients.
Comrade Ismail praised the state government for approving the union’s request, noting that the beneficiaries have made remarkable sacrifices to protect the image and integrity of the journalism profession.
In his goodwill message, Commissioner for Information, Youth, Sports and Culture Sagir Musa Ahmed reaffirmed the government’s commitment to maintaining cordial relations with the media and supporting the NUJ.
Represented by Senior Special Assistant on Media Affairs Hajiya Zainab Rabo Ringim, the commissioner lauded the achievements of the current NUJ leadership in a short period.
He also described journalists in Jigawa as professionals dedicated to accurate and responsible information dissemination, adding that the state government is proud of their contributions.
Sagir further revealed that the government has formed a Media Campaign Team composed of veteran journalists, which will soon be inaugurated.
Speaking on behalf of the beneficiaries, veteran journalist Salmanu Adamu Rishi expressed gratitude to the NUJ leadership for acknowledging and remembering the sacrifices of senior journalists who helped grow the profession in the state.
